Overview
The Manipur State Museum, situated in Imphal, is one of the most popular museums in the state. It was inaugurated in 1969 by the then Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi, and has ever since remained one of the most prominent museums of the state alongside being a very popular tourist destination as well.
The Manipur State Museum houses a wide variety of galleries showcasing natural history, ethnology and archaeology. It houses tribal clothings, royal costumes, polo gear, Buddha relics and war weapons used by kings and their men, to name a few. Built near Polo Ground in Imphal West, the museum also conducts awareness programs and thematic exhibitions.
Useful information:
- Most of the items in display at the museum hold great historical significance, one of the most important examples being the 54feet long royal boat, which is on display in the open gallery.
- The museum can be visited any time of the year.
- It opens at 10 in the morning and remains open till 4 in the evening for visitors.
